I remember almost back to when i was about 4 years old. I have some memories of adventuring down the street but only to the end of the block', and that I was instructed to never cross the street. I would walk like a 'big guy' to the edge and look around and tempted to cross to the open field to play. I knew I could do it, I would tell my mom and dad I could do it and they should let me do it. Once I even did it without permission. Boy oh boy that was a weird feeling for a 4 year old. I didn't really feel very secure in that dirt lot/ open field without the permission of my parents. In many ways that is what the Iraqi's are going through. They want the power, beating the 'Iraqi Soveriegnty' drum. Give us the power, we can do it. We want control. You know the chant. Now that the USA has a new President Elect in Barack Obama, who chanted 'get out of Iraq' as part of his campaign platform, the Iraqi's are sending mixed messages, much as I did to my parents about crossing the street to the dirt lot.
On the one hand they wanted the 'power and authority', yet on the other hand they are talking about concern that the USA will withdraw to quickly and the Iraqi military not being ready to handle the challenge. The compromise, which has been the US strategy all along is that the US troops and FOB -forward operating bases, will move out of the cities and be the 'big bear in the woods. This is what General Satler of the United States Marines said in an interview I produced back in 2005/6 (as i recall it was late 05). He called it exactly that, 'big bear in the woods' that would be close enough at hand to help the Iraqi military if they needed a '911' backup.
So be prepared for mixed signals out of Iraq as they finalize the 'Status of Forces' Agreement with the Iraqi
government which will be approved for the UN by the end of the year. There is also a sense among many Iraqi's that this is a 'minimum level of gratitude to President Bush' to give to him before he leaves office. In many ways that is what the Iraqi's are going through.
